"Reunion"  Wood Firing and Salt Glazing

This firing workshop uses our newest & largest kiln.  It is designed for potters who have participated in past workshops at our pottery and have limited time to spend at a workshop, but still wish to explore wood firing and vapor glazing.

Over the weekend, you will glaze and wad the bisque pots you bring with you. Plan to arrive in time for dinner on Friday.

On Saturday morning we will discuss the methods and variations of wood firings. Then you will have the rest of the afternoon to glaze and wad your pots. The pieces will be loaded once everyone has finished glazing on Sunday.

The firing will take place several weeks later. Either a participant from the area where you live will return to pick up your fired pieces, or we will work out another return method. We will document the firing and photos will be returned along with your pots.

You are welcome to return & participate in the firing.  Individual arrangements can be made to schedule for that time period.

Workshop Summary

While I hope you get some gems out of the firings, the main reason for coming to the workshop should be to increase your knowledge of different firing methods, and to learn what they can do to enhance the surface quality of pottery.

The spirit of the potter will be reflected in their pots regardless of their technical abilities.  The real beauty of pottery comes from the joy of the process.

I suggest you consider reading Chapter 1 “Towards A Standard”, from Bernard Leach’s A Potters Book.  It is timeless.
