2005 Workbook for Wood Firing Workshop

This is a 4 day workshop intended for both the intermediate and advanced potter, who wants to experience these unique and dynamic firing techniques.

Pit Firing:

Bring 6-15 burnished and bisqued pots. Each participant will have approximately a 12" x 24" x 24" space in the pit kiln to fill with their pots.

The first day

of the session will be consumed with glazing, wadding and loading.  After preheating to dry and warm the chambers,  this kiln is fired with wood for about 18 hours.

In addition to firing the Noborigama there will be one overnight pit firing offering participants a variety of surface effects.

There will be ongoing discussions related to pot forms best suited to firing methods, firing effects and glazing.

Wood & Salt Firing:

Bring about 8-10 bisqued pots for each firing chamber.  Every participant will have approximately an 18"x18"x 9" space in the Wood Chamber and 18"x18"x 9" space space in the Salt Chamber.

For Wood Firing wear cotton or wool work clothes,
and bring leather gloves if you have them.

Participants will fire their pots in a wood fired double chambered Noborigama, the second chamber of which will be salt glazed.

Class Size:  10.

Tuition:

$ 560 per person includes all meals,
materials & firing costs.

Workshop Summary

While I hope you get some gems out of the firings, the main reason for coming to the workshop should be to increase your knowledge of different firing methods, and to learn what they can do to enhance the surface quality of pottery.

The spirit of the potter will be reflected in their pots regardless of their technical abilities.  The real beauty of pottery comes from the joy of the process.

I suggest you consider reading Chapter 1 “Towards A Standard”, from Bernard Leach’s A Potters Book.  It is timeless.
