Wood Ash

During wood firing, pots are engulfed in a river of flame.  The wood fuel produces ash which profoundly effect’s the surface quality of a pot.

Pottery, that was glazed prior to firing, is enriched from the fluxing action of potassium and sodium which are components of wood ash. 

Potters Chop

The symbol Robert stamps on his pots is a stylization of  “water sculptures” he made in the 1970’s.  The mark or symbol is referred to as a “potters chop.”

 Robert also signs each piece, in small letters, with  “Compton
