Potters Chop
The
symbol Robert stamps on his pots is a stylization of “water
sculptures” he made in the 1970’s. The mark or symbol is referred
to as a “potters chop.”
Robert also signs each piece, in small letters, with “Compton
Wood Ash
During wood firing,
pots are engulfed in a river of flame. The wood fuel produces ash
which profoundly effect’s the surface quality of a pot.
Pottery, that was glazed prior to firing, is enriched from the
fluxing action of potassium and sodium which are components of wood
ash. |
