Salt Vapors
Some pieces in Robert’s salt
kiln were glazed prior to loading. Pots, like the one shown in this
photograph, have had their glaze modified by the sodium vapors in the salt
chamber.
This same
glaze would have very different characteristics if it were fired in the
first chamber of his Noborigama, or in a gas fired kiln. |

Wad Marks
The "flash patterns" on the
bottom of this vessel,
are a result of “Wads”
used prevent the pot from fusing to the kiln shelf.
The choice of
materials used for wadding,
the shape and the amount of wadding used,
are important aesthetic considerations for the potter. |
