Vapor Glazing
In the salt glazing process
pots are actually engulfed in a sea of fire.
Sodium (salt) is introduced to the kiln,
where it's fluxing action creates a glaze,
this is known as "vapor glazing"
|
|
The side of the pot facing the fire,
" windward side"
receives a more pronounced glaze pattern.
The side facing away for the fire,
"leeward side"
may have a less robust surface.

Wad Marks
The "flash
patterns" on the bottom of this vessel,
are a result of “Wads”
used prevent the pot from fusing to the kiln shelf.
The choice of
materials used for wadding,
the shape and the amount of wadding used,
are important aesthetic considerations for the potter |
