The Process of Salt Glazing

Salt Glazing

Salt Glazing is created in three different kilns at the pottery.
The single chamber Catenary salt kiln is a dedicated salt kiln.
While the two Noborigama wood fired kilns are salted in their back chambers.

The effects of salt glazing, are created from sodium vapors released when salt added to the kiln at 2200F.
The chemical reaction of these hot vapors with clay, creates a textural quality that is unique to salt glazing.

Prior to firing, all of Robert's pots are  "wadded"  to prevent their fusing to the kiln shelf.  The wad marks on each piece are an important visual element.

While most salt pots are left raw prior to firing, Robert generally applies a celadon liner glaze, for functional and aesthetic considerations.

Salt is usually added to the kiln between 2100F and 2400F .
In the photo above it is dumped from an angle iron directly into the firebox.
