Raku Firing

Raku is often associated with Zen Buddhism and the Japanese Tea Ceremony.  The word means "joy" or "happiness".

Raku pots are heated to 1800 degrees F,  at which time the kiln is opened and each molten pot is removed with a pair of tongs.  The pots are then placed in containers for smoking.

This rapid cooling fractures the glaze, creating a distinctive network of lines called "Crazing".

Once cooled  the soot covered pots are cleaned to reveal the crazed surface and unusual colors.

Raku pots are not watertight.  Their beauty is their function.

The hot Raku pots set fire to the sawdust filled smoker.
