Bee Hive Prison Kiln

Washington, DC

There were once 5 kilns like this on the Prison grounds. They were built in the early 20th century and the inmates worked at the brick yard making the bricks that built the prison.

Heavy turn buckles keep the straps that support
the outward thrust of the dome.
Looking into one of the many fire boxes of this coal fired kiln.

Note rail road tracks going into kiln for transporting brick The Prison was closed in 2003,  and the kilns had not been used in over 30 years.  This photo is of the last Bee Hive which is now on property that has been turned into a park.

It is open to the public
