Mirek Smisek
Te Horo and Aotearoa, New Zealand

Mirek, ever the ladies man, giving Christine a hug in 2002.

He has received recognition,  most recently, as the potter who made all the pots in the "Lord of the Rings" movies.

Mirek is one of the most senior potters in New Zealand, arriving in the 1950's to help with brick making at some of the earliest potteries.

The photos below, taken by Robert in 1995, were of Mirek's  former pottery where he was know was "the salt potter" of New Zealand.  His double bee hive kilns were works of art unto themselves.

Domed ceiling of the Bee Hive kiln.

The two Bee Hive Chambers share a common chimney.

When Robert met Mirek in 1995, he was unloading  the last firing in his small gas fired salt kiln.  See how the bricks in the ceiling are badly eroded.
Note how columns of bricks were used to support the arch in its final days.
Mirek said this kiln was putting out some of the best pots, now that is was nearing the end of its firing life.
