John Madden
New Zealand

John was doing a firing on the day after the New Zealand Society of Pottery Conference,
Big Smoke
this was his last firing.

John Madden taking a peek into the firebox.

The metal firebox door is counterbalanced for ease of opening.  It is tilted forward slightly, to prevent drag, as it opens, but snug and tight when closed.

Note the counter balance used for the firebox door.

John used several features that were quite interesting in his kiln.  There is a Butter-fly Valve in the chimney as a shut off damper.

You can just see the round handle on the right side of the chimney, which is turned
to shut the Butter Fly damper.
