Noel Plowman,  President of Hamilton Potters Guild,
showing the gas fired Clam Shell Raku Kiln
owned by the guild, in 2002.

Robert and Christine first saw this design, and got a copy of the plans,  in 1991 when Robert was giving a workshop at the Rotoroua Potter Club.

A good welder is the key in getting a nice hinge to make this design function well.  Also by  reinforcing the cut edges of the drum, you can  add to the strength of the kilns structure.

A more advanced design than most clam shell kilns, the potter who built this kiln threw a chimney flue and attached it to the top of the drum.
