Ian Dalzel
 New Zealand

Ian was the only potter Robert has ever met that fired with coal.  For many years he was wood firing in a two chamber kiln, (shown at bottom of page) , but a local source of coal became available to him and he finds it a wonderful fuel.

The one comment he made was regarding the rather refractory quality of the coal ash, and said that he added a bit of salt to the firings to ensure a good melt of the coal ash.

Note the close set of the iron grates in the coal firebox.

Ian said he could pickup coal in a driving rainstorm and shovel it into the firebox with no worries.
Not something a wood fire potter can do with his/her fuel.

The two chamber wood kiln, is no longer in use, now that Ian fires with wood.

Another of the round chimneys that Robert and Christine saw so frequently in New Zealand.
