Ian Dalzel
New Zealand
 |
Ian was the only potter Robert has ever met that fired
with coal. For many years he was wood firing in a two chamber kiln, (shown
at bottom of page) , but a local source of coal became available to him and
he finds it a wonderful fuel.
The one comment he made was regarding the rather
refractory quality of the coal ash, and said that he added a bit of salt to
the firings to ensure a good melt of the coal ash. |

Note the close set of the iron grates in the coal firebox. |

Ian said he could pickup coal in a driving rainstorm and
shovel it into the firebox with no worries.
Not something a wood fire
potter can do with his/her fuel. |

The two chamber wood kiln, is no longer in use, now that Ian
fires with wood. |
Another of the round chimneys that Robert and Christine
saw so frequently in New Zealand. |
