Raku Kilns

Raku Kilns

1993-Present

Car Kiln

One of two Raku kilns at Robert's studio.
The car kiln was designed so it can be opened and unloaded by one person

Since the cart comes out of the chamber,
it is a distance from the kilns heat mass
 and can be easily approached.

The Raku Car Kiln can be unload from three sides.

A pyrometer attached to the door allows monitoring of the temperature without opening the chamber and letting heat escape.

The Car Kiln glides on inverted angle iron for tracks, the metal wheels have a V-groove
that keeps them aligned

Custom Designed Raku Tongs

Traditional Raku tongs make it hard to grasp enclosed or spherical forms.  Robert designed a tongs with double forks that wrap around these hard to mange shapes. The tongs are constructed from alumina tubing, and welded to create the interlocking tines.  An extra long handle makes it possible to put distance
between the potter and the kiln's heat.

Top Hat

Rarely are Raku kilns built with a consideration of beauty.

Function is the key work in Raku and that usually means how easily can it be unloaded when hot and how convenient it can be reloaded for
a subsequent Raku Firing

This kiln was retired in 2009 after 13 years of use

A counter weight is used so it can be
opened or closed by one person
