New Zealand Textiles

Flax New Zealand's native fiber.

Christine is standing in front of the Foxton Flax Stripping Museum, Foxton, New Zealand.  These are stalks of NZ flax after harvesting.

After processing the flax fiber is dried
on the ground.

Prior to the influence of European culture, all textiles woven by the native Maori's consisted of flax and feathers.  Many of the native birds have become extinct, but flax is still widely used and grown through out New Zealand.

Christine with Willie Calvin in Auckland.
Willie is a NZ weaver, spinner & dyer.

Willie was honored for her work in teaching weaving, spinning and dying by the NZ Weavers and Spinners Association in 2002, who presented her with the "Silver Thread Award".
Willie was instrumental in the development of "rainbow dying" during the 1970's, which is now used by textile artists around the world.
